Art therapy is a mental health profession that uses the creative art making/process and applied psychological theory to help individuals explore their emotions, improve self-awareness, and enhance their overall well-being. It's a form of psychotherapy that utilizes various art mediums like drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, etc. Art therapy helps to facilitate and improve communication, self-expression, emotional healing and more.
Creative modalities in conjunction with psychotherapeutic treatment approaches, can help people explore feelings, resolve conflicts, develop self-awareness, learn new skills, improve social-communication skills, reduce anxiety, strengthen self-concept, build self-esteem and more. One does not have to be a skilled artist to benefit from Art Therapy; it is an individualized process that involves the exploration of many forms of creative expression.
Often times, personal experiences and emotions are too challenging or complex to put into words. Utilizing a Creative approach in psychotherapy creates a unique opportunity for healing for all ages. Art therapy can help a person find their voice, communicate feelings, thoughts, and explore who they are. Art therapy is a strength-based approach that can be integrated with a variety of modalities.
